Recognition of American Public Documents in Germany (Apostille)
Since October 15, 1981 the United States have been part of the 1961 Hague Convention abolishing the Requirements of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents. As a result, this Consulate General no longer legalizes American public documents for use in the Federal Republic of Germany. These documents will be certified by the Secretary of State of the respective state, by placing the Apostille“ on the document.
The Apostille shall be issued at the request of the person who has signed the document or of any other bearer. In all cases the documents must be accompanied by a letter stating the fact that the documents will be used in the Federal Republic of Germany and asking explicitly for the Apostille according to the Hague Convention.
