In commemoration of the Ottendorfer Library’s 140th anniversary, Mary Lea and Thomas Enderle recount their travels through Germany, Czech Republic, and Austria on the trail of the library’s patron and founder, Oswald Ottendorfer.
On the occasion of the Ottendorfer Library’s 140th anniversary, immerse yourself in a travelogue celebrating the life of its patron and founder, Oswald Ottendorfer. Mary-Lea and Thomas Enderle have spent the past year on the trail of Oswald Ottendorfer in Europe. They chronicle their travel through video footage as a pair of “history gnomes” into cities in Germany, Czech Republic, and Austria. They delve into Ottendorfer’s participation in the revolutions of 1848 demanding democratic reforms in Europe—the failure of which led him, and other 48ers, to flee to America. Also included is footage of his hometown of Zwittau (now Svitavy, in the Czech Republic), which, too, has an Ottendorfer library! Don’t miss this fresh, sometimes playful, and often entertaining look at this multifaceted, multicultural individual who made his mark on both sides of the Atlantic. The travelogue will be followed by a Q&A.
Date and Time: Thursday, December 5 from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM
