From world-renowned documentarian Hubert Super—director of Sundance winner We Come as Friends and the Oscar-nominated Darwin’s Nightmare—comes Epicentro, an immersive and metaphorical portrait of post-colonial, “utopian” Cuba in the aftermath of the 1898 explosion of the USS Maine. This Big Bang ended Spanish colonial dominance in the Americas and ushered in the era of the American Empire and neo-colonialism. Simultaneously, a powerful tool of conquest was born: cinema as propaganda.
In Epicentro, Sauper explores a century of interventionism, cycles of myth-making, and the extraordinary people of Havana—particularly its children, whom he calls “young prophets”—to interrogate time, imperialism, and cinema itself.
About the participants:
Hubert Sauper was born in Kitzbühel, Tyrolian Alps. After spending his childhood in Austria, he lived in Great Britain, the USA, Tanzania, Congo, and South Sudan. His “home base” since the mid '90s has been France, and he has studied directing in Vienna and Paris (at the University of Performing Arts and the Univ. de Paris VIII).
Sauper’s sociopolitical and poetic films have won over 50 major international prizes, among them awards at the Venice Film Festival, Berlinale, and Sundance Film Festival. He has also been honored by the César Awards, the Austrian Academy Awards, and the European Academy Awards. His documentary Darwin’s Nightmare (2004) was nominated for Best Documentary at the Oscars in 2006.
