German Language Day at the United Nations (July 1)

On and around 1 July, the UN celebrates the German Language Day. The date was chosen as it marks the 47th anniversary of the German Translation Section, which started operating at UN Headquarters in New York on 1 July 1975. As 2022 also marks the 20th anniversary of Switzerland joining the UN, the German Translation Section is partnering with the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the UN in New York and the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York to host a film screening of an award-winning Swiss movie on 30 June in observance of this year’s German Language Day. There will also be free German trial classes by the Goethe-Institut New York and an interactive video contest.

Doors open at 6pm, opening remarks at 6.30pm), at the Goethe-Institut New York (30 Irving Place, New York, NY 10003). Registration required by 29 June. The movie will also be offered for free via streaming from 1 July through 6 July, register via e-mail to deutsch@un.org by 30 June).
- “Schnupperstunde”: free German trial classes

from 12-1pm EST (elementary level) and
from 1.15-2.15pm EST (intermediate level)
from 5-6pm (elementary high) in-person at the Goethe-Institut New York.
Participants must register by 29 June.
- Video contest “My favorite German word”
All German speakers and learners are invited to submit a short video clip (max. 30 seconds and in landscape mode) in English or German featuring their favorite German word and an explanation of what makes it so special. A video with the best entries will be published on the website and Twitter account of the German Translation Section on 1 July. Please upload your videos here or send them via E-Mail by 24 June.
