On the Djerassi Resident Artists Program’s 40th anniversary and the centenary of its visionary founder, Carl Djerassi, current Executive Director Martin Rauchbauer sits down with founding trustee Dale Djerassi and other key personalities to tell the Djerassi story. This event is a collaboration between Deutsches Haus at NYU and the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Woodside, California, and will provide insights into the program’s founding principles, evolution, and enduring impact.

For over 40 years, the mission of the Djerassi Resident Artists Program mission has been to support the creativity of artists by providing an uninterrupted sanctuary for work, reflection, and collegial interaction, all within the captivating embrace of natural beauty. Situated in the scenic Santa Cruz Mountains, with Silicon Valley in close reach, this organization transcends the traditional artist residency—it is renowned as an international incubator of artistic freedom, innovation, and collaboration in every discipline. Embracing the belief in the profound influence of artists on society and their potential to instigate systemic change, the Djerassi Program encourages artists to delve deep into the crucial conversations of our time. It stands as a unique space, fostering both artistic exploration and engagement with the pressing issues of the contemporary world.
About Carl Djerassi:
Born in Austria in 1923, Carl Djerassi left an indelible mark on both science and the arts. Renowned as a pioneering chemist, novelist, and playwright, he made groundbreaking contributions to science, particularly in the development of the first oral contraceptive. Beyond his scientific achievements, Carl's legacy includes the establishment of the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in honor of his late daughter Pamela Djerassi. “The Art of Residency: The Evolution of an International Laboratory of Creativity” is made possible in part through an endowment established by Roger J. Schnetzer.
